Important: uses federal FLSA only (40-hour weekly threshold, 1.5× rate). Overtime rules vary by state, city, industry, and union contract. California, for example, applies daily overtime over 8 hours. Some workers are exempt entirely. This is informational only and not legal or payroll advice. Use a licensed payroll provider for actual wage calculations.
What this is
A simple calculator for federal-FLSA-rule overtime: anything over 40 hours in a workweek is paid at 1.5× the regular hourly rate. Enter total hours worked in a week and the hourly rate; the tool splits it into regular pay, overtime pay, and total pay.
When to use it
Quick sanity check on a payroll calculation, a small employer estimating overtime cost, a worker wanting to confirm their own paycheck. Not for actual payroll processing, see the disclaimer below.
How it works
Type the total hours worked in a single workweek. Type the hourly rate. The tool splits hours into regular (up to 40) and overtime (above 40), applies the 1.5× rate to the overtime portion, and shows the totals.
Important: this is informational only
Overtime law varies by state, city, industry, and union contract. California has daily overtime rules (over 8 hours in a day). Some states have weekly thresholds different from federal. Some workers are exempt from overtime entirely (salaried, certain professional categories). Tipped workers have different rules.
This calculator uses only the basic federal FLSA rule (40 hours/week threshold, 1.5× the regular rate). It is not legal advice and is not a substitute for a payroll service or an attorney. For real payroll calculations, use a licensed payroll provider or consult an employment lawyer.
