Geo-fencing

Geo-fencing combines GPS location with a defined boundary, usually a circle around the workplace coordinates, to verify that a worker is physically present when they clock in. If the worker's phone reports a location outside the fence, the punch is rejected or flagged.

Geo-fencing is offered by several time-tracking products marketed to field service, multi-location retail, and construction, contexts where employers want to verify physical presence at a job site. It works as designed in those contexts.

Geo-fencing is wrong-shaped for some other contexts. Volunteer programs, trust-based small teams, and remote workforces don't benefit from it, the verification implies a trust deficit that may not exist, and it adds friction to clock-in that drives abandonment. Most products that ship geo-fencing make it optional per workspace.
