Punch in / punch out are the actions of recording the start and end of a work shift via a time clock. The terminology comes from old mechanical time clocks that physically punched the time onto a paper time card.

"Punch in" means to record the start of a shift. "Punch out" means to record the end. The terms persist from the era of mechanical time clocks even though most modern implementations are a button tap.

Some industries use different vocabulary for the same action. "Clock in / clock out" is interchangeable. "Sign in / sign out" is common in volunteer contexts. "Tap in / tap out" fits the tablet-kiosk pattern. The action is identical: log a timestamped event marking the boundary of a working period.

A common operational concern is the forgotten punch-out, a worker who clocks in at 9am but forgets to clock out at 5pm. Without intervention, the open shift accumulates indefinitely. Most modern systems cap forgotten shifts at a configurable maximum length via auto-close.
