Clock in is the act of recording the start of a work shift in a time-tracking system. A clock-in produces a timestamped event that becomes one boundary of the shift's recorded hours.

Clock in is the action that begins a tracked shift. In a digital time-tracking system, a clock-in creates a database row marking the worker (or their name+ID), the exact moment, and usually the source of the event (kiosk tablet, personal link, QR scan, or admin manual entry).

The matching action at the end of the shift is the clock-out. The duration between the two becomes the worker's recorded hours for that shift.

Some systems require an account login to clock in (a username + password); others, especially those built for volunteers, shift staff, or any context where accounts are friction, accept a tap on a shared device, a scan of a posted QR code, or an open of a bookmarked personal URL.
