Gross hours are the total clocked time on a shift, before unpaid breaks are subtracted. A worker who clocked in at 9am and out at 5pm has 8 gross hours regardless of whether they took a lunch break.

Gross hours are the raw clocked time for a shift, the difference between clock-in and clock-out. They include any unpaid breaks the worker took during the shift.

Gross hours are usually not the number that drives payroll. The number that drives payroll is net hours, which is gross hours minus unpaid breaks.

The distinction matters because some teams (e.g., restaurant servers covering both lunch and dinner with a long mid-afternoon break) have very different gross and net hours. Reports that mix the two are confusing for both managers and workers.
